Anchorage

Anchorage is Alaska's largest city, most internal flights route through Anchorage and most travellers spend a few nights here. It is an interesting city, offering a number of museums, plenty of parks, interesting markets and serves as good base however you choose to travel in Alaska.

Denali National Park

The main reason visitors flock here is to view North America's highest peak, Mount McKinley. At over 20,000 feet, the snow and glacier covered mountain dominates Denali National Park, which is easily accessible from Anchorage in the south. Classified as a sub-arctic desert, Denali has many rare plants and an abundance of wildlife - brown bears, moose, dall sheep, caribou and wolves, as well as rich flora and fauna.

Kodiak

Kodiak is Alaska's largest island and home to the mighty Brown Bear, weighing in at around 1500 pounds. Approximately 2500 bears live on the island, and they gorge themselves on the many thousands of salmon swimming in the open rivers and lakes. Fly west from the town of Kodiak, for the prime wilderness locations. Hiking, fishing and wildlife viewing are all first class.

Katmai National Park

The centrepiece of the park, the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, was created as a result of the eruption in 1912 of the Novarupta Volcano. Today the park is a place of tranquillity, much of the ash from the eruption remains buried in the valleys but the flora and fauna has returned. Moose, wolves and Brown Bears can be spotted here.

Seward

This scenic town serves as a picturesque gateway to the Kenai Fjords National Park. It has a thriving fishing industry and is the starting point for some amazing cruise tours of the surrounding inlets and fjords.

Climate and when to go

You should ideally travel between May and September, summer days are long and temperatures can often be reasonably high. Rainfall should be expected at anytime, especially if cruising along the coast. If you are travelling to Alaska during the winter months be prepared for icy winds and freezing temperatures.
