The Travel Foundation is a UK charity that cares for the people and places we love to visit. It is helping the travel industry take effective action on sustainable tourism, in mainstream destinations across the world, improving quality and keeping holidays special...in to the future.
Sustainable tourism is simply about making a positive difference to the people and environment of destinations we travel to.
- It can provide the incentive and income for destinations to protect the natural environment and wildlife
- Help reduce carbon emissions by encouraging accommodations and holidaymakers to conserve energy
- As well as offer maximum economic benefits to the local communities, when products and services for tourism are sourced locally
- It allows local people to make a decent living for themselves and their families giving access to new earning opportunities
- Sourcing local products and services and treating staff fairly, also offers customers an enriched holiday experience
- Carbon offsetting allows travelers to compensate for unavoidable emissions, (eg their flight)
- The environmental impacts of travel need to be balanced against the immense benefit sustainable tourism brings to destinations and the people who live there
- Sustainability offers great benefits to travelers, keeping destinations special, offering new experiences and interacting with happy locals, who are truly benefiting from their visit
- Most importantly, it helps ensure there will be great destinations for us all to visit for generations to come
What can holidaymakers do? Just little things can make a big difference !
- Buying locally made souvenirs or crafts
- Eating at local bars and cafes
- Going out on excursions that use local guides and drivers
- Getting around on public transport, bicycles or even walking when possible
- Taking quick showers instead of baths
- Asking not to have towels and sheets replaced on a daily basis
- Not buying products made from endangered plants or wild animals
